There are many who may claim to have a 'passenger list' from the
Eastland. However, since boarding these chartered ships for the
Michigan City picnic was strickly on a first-come, first-served
basis, it is impossible for a certified passenger list to
exist. The Eastland passenger list can only be derived through coroner's
records, court testimony, public record and oral history.
Passengers
on the Eastland were, for the most part, Western Electric
factory workers and their families from the Hawthorne Plant in Cicero,
Illinois. They were comprised of a cross-section of Chicago's major
ethnic cultures of the time. The majority were Eastern European
immigrants or first-generation Americans of Bohemian, German, Polish
and Lithuanian origins. The highest casualties were among those
of German descent, followed closely by those of Bohemian descent.
MARITAL STATUS
Well
over half of the victims were single. These were young, energetic
factory workers. Married couples on board the Eastland were generally
in their early twenties, with one or two children.
For graphing purposes, the children or child categories were considered
age 15 or younger. There were many workers at Western Electric only
16 years old.
CASUALTIES
BY MARITAL STATUS BY AGE GROUP
The
majority of the passenger casualties were in their late teens and
early 20's.
Married victims
were equally split between the 20 and 30 year old age brackets.
CASUALTIES
BY GENDER BY AGE GROUP
The
majority of victims were female. The predominate factor was the
long white dresses the women wore that day. Women and children found
their way to the interior cabins to get out of the misty rain that
morning. These cabins, especially the port side cabins, reaped the
highest death tolls. These cabins were also filled with amenities
such as pianos and ice boxes that tumbled down onto the passengers
as the cabins filled with water.
WHERE DID
THESE LISTS COME FROM?
The casualty
lists presented were originally derived from George W. Hilton's
book, with permission. Professor Hilton is a member of the Eastland
Memorial Society. We encourage any substantiated corrections or
additions. Casualties (A-Z) were comprised of reported deaths by
the Cook County Coroner's Office, Western Electric, Newspapers and
Cemetery Records. Questionable Casualties are comprised of initial
reports from newspapers and estate settlements.
HOW CAN
YOU HELP?
Survivors listed here are derived from personal accounts, member
relationships, recollections, court records and other sources. The
Rescuers and Others section includes those individuals who assisted
in the rescue of survivors or processing of the victims. Our goal
is to make these lists as complete as possible. Your participation
in this effort is appreciated.
