The Dave and Rose Nelson Eastland Collection is relocated from
the Chicago Maritime Society to its final home at the Center for History in Wheaton, IL
10-July-2001
The third and final version of the web site is launched after nearly
ten months of volunteer develop. The initial release contains over
200 pages.
16-March-2001 Chicago Maritime Society Annual Meeting
and Benefit Lecture was held at the Chicago Yacht Club-Monroe Street. David
Nelson presented an illustrated presentation, 'The Incredible
Story of the Eastland Disaster,' and meet Libby Hruby, an Eastland
survivor.
10-Jan-2001 The Eastland Disaster Museum's collection is combined
with the collection of the Chicago Maritime Society's artifacts to
form the world's largest collection of Eastland artifacts. David Nelson
remains as curator.
14-Oct-2000 The mast from the Eastland is relocated from its
exhibit at the Museum of Science and Industry back to the Chicago
Maritime Society.
24-Jul-2000 The
Eastland Memorial Society named the recipients of three major awards.
Mr. Mark Gumbinger of Kenosha, Wisconsin (Eastland Disaster Advocate
of the Year), Dr. George W. Hilton of Columbia, Maryland (Eastland
Disaster Advocate of the Decade), and Mr. David Nelson of Winfield,
Illinois (Eastland Disaster Advocate of the Century) have each been
recognized by the Eastland Memorial Society for their work. All three
individuals have made great strides in educating others about the
Eastland disaster, disseminating truths about the disaster through
research and verification, and remembering the victims of the disaster
and their families.
22-Jul-2000 The Eastland Disaster Historical Society
hosts an event at the Museum of Science and Industry for descendents
of Eastland passengers and rescuers. Karl Sup was not in attendance
as his wife was ill.
05-May-2000 Work on the new web site begins. The current web
site will not accomodate all of the new content.
27-Apr-2000 The memorial plaque is removed and misplaced or
stolen from the disaster site.
12-Apr-2000 David Nelson takes possession of the complete,
original dive suit after a generous but furious fund raising effort.
18-Mar-2000 Work begins to acquire and verify one of the original
dive suits worn by a diver on the wreck of the Eastland.
18-Feb-2000 The Titanic Exhibit with its Chicago Connections
section featuring the Eastland opens to the general public at the
Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago.
16-Feb-2000 A special preview of The Titanic Exhibit featuring
the Eastland opens to special guests and members at the Museum of
Science and Industry in Chicago. Attending were Libby Hruby and Ken
Rabe, both survivors. Karl Sup and David Nelson were in attendance.
David Nelson contributed many artifacts to the displays, including
the Uncle Sam suit worn by Herman Krause on the Eastland.
19-Jan-2000 Co-founder and president, Karl Sup, will be visiting
the current Titanic exhibit on display in Toronto, Canada before it
moves to Chicago after it closes in Toronto on February 10th. Look
for more details soon!
14-Jan-2000 Added the July 24th, 1915
edition of the Dubuque Telegraph-Herald. Of additional interest is
a list of other steamship disasters from 1890 to 1915.
14-Jan-2000 Added a letter from
the Eastland Disaster Museum, explaining their origin, motives and
generosity. I encourage everyone to view this incredible collection.
16-Dec-1999 Herman Krause's Uncle Sam suit was placed on loan
through the Eastland Disaster Museum to the Chicago Connections exhibit
at the Museum of Science and Industry, part of the Titanic exhibit
coming February 18th, 2000.
12-Dec-1999 On this Sunday, the site of the Eastland disaster
was examined by members of the Underwater Archaeological Society of
Chicago, lead by Tim Woesley and Sam Frank. Although spirits were
high, no artifacts related to the Eastland were recovered. I want
to thank everyone who stopped by to visit. All of you were the real
treasure found that day.
11-Dec-1999 The Uncle Sam suit worn by Herman
Krause when the Eastland capsized was placed on permanent loan
to the Eastland Disaster Museum in Wheaton, IL. Donated by Karl Sup,
co-founder and president of the Society.
15-Nov-1999 The history of Western
Electric is added to the web site. Many people have asked questions
regarding Western Electric, and hopefully we've answered most of them!
14-Nov-1999 Added comprehensive web site search
capabilities. Try it out!
11-Nov-1999 Added an article from the State
Journal-Register in Springfield, Illinois. My thanks to Doug Pokorski
and his editor for permission to reprint this article, which lends
insight into the impact of the disaster on other cities.
10-Nov-1999 Added a gallery of
images from the Iroquois Theater Fire. It is remarkable to see the
similarities between these two tragedies.
08-Nov-1999 Added the list of victims
from the Iroquois Theater Fire.
31-Oct-1999 Per request, the story of the Iroquois
Theater Fire is presented. The worst loss of life in a Chicago
fire claimed 602 victims in 1903. If further information is required,

22-Oct-1999 A southern Minnesota high school librarian, Bonnie
Adams, contributes the Eastland
poem written by Carl Sandburg. Be sure
to read the newly added Carl Sandburg biography and poetry.
07-Oct-1999 The Eastland Disaster article runs in the Chicago
Sun-Times. Permission is granted by Mr. Herrmann to reprint the article
in our web site.
04-Oct-1999 The Eastland Memorial Society forges a relationship
with the Eastland Disaster Museum in Wheaton, IL and the Chicago Maritime
Society. We look forward to years of a wonderful partnership with
these tremendous organizations.
27-Sep-1999 President and co-founder Karl Sup met with a photographer
of the Chicago Sun-Times to contribute to an upcoming article
to be written by Andrew Herrmann, the Sunday News Editor of the Sun-Times.
Karl was phone interviewed previously by Mr. Herrmann.

02-Dec-1998 George W. Hilton joins the Eastland Memorial Society.
Professor Emeritus George W. Hilton, author of Eastland: Legacy of
the Titanic, met with co-founder Mary Bonevelle on December 2nd, 1998
in Michigan. We are pleased to have his support and in-depth knowledge
of this event in our membership. Welcome!!

19-May-1998 Mary Bonevelle and Karl Sup first discuss the merits
of creating an Eastland organization. Mary created the first Eastland
web site on the Internet back in 1997.
