EASTLAND SITES

Southport Video has produced a video documentary of the Eastland Disaster, as well as other well known Great Lakes ships like the Edmund Fitzgerald. Mark Gumbinger is a member of the Eastland Memorial Society.

The Chicago Public Library has a page on the Eastland which gives a summary of information and provides access to other postcard pictures of the disaster scene.

The Eastland Disaster Historical Society has a site dedicated to promoting the history of the Eastland.

CHICAGO SITES

Chicago Historical Society. The Chicago Historical Society is a privately endowed, independent institution devoted to collecting, interpreting, and presenting the rich multicultural history of Chicago and Illinois, as well as selected areas of American history, to the public through exhibitions, programs, research collections, and publications.

Friends of the Chicago River’s mission is to foster the vitality of the Chicago River for the human, plant and animal communities within its watershed. Friends envisions a continuous Chicago River Trail, linking the more than 50 urban neighborhoods and suburban communities along the River’s 156 miles.

The Great Chicago Fire and the Web of Memory is a wonderful site dedicated to the living memory of the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. In-depth historical detail into this horrendous fire is provided. This site was developed and is maintained by the Chicago Historical Society.

GREAT LAKES SITES

Association for Great Lakes Maritime History is an international organization of museums, historical societies, libraries, archives, and individuals interested in preserving Great Lakes maritime history. The AGLMH holds an annual meeting, publishes a newsletter, and encourages research and the dissemination and exchange of information among members.

Wisconsin Maritime Museum at Manitowoc. An online tour of permanent and special exhibits, as well as upcoming events and membership information.

The Great Lakes Ship File - Formerly the Runge Collection. Data on more than 7,000 vessels is in the Great Lakes Marine Collection of the Milwaukee Public Library. The files include ships that sailed in 1679 and some that are on the lakes today; some that are diesel-powered, some rigged with sails, and some barges; cargo vessels, passenger boats, military and even pleasure craft.

Minnesota's Historic Shipwrecks - Lake Superior and Inland Waters. In the interest of preserving Minnesota's Lake Superior shipwrecks and other underwater archaeological sites in Minnesota’s lakes and rivers, the State Historic Preservation Office of the Minnesota Historical Society has initiated a program of submerged cultural resource management.

Marine Historical Society of Detroit. The Marine Historical Society of Detroit, a non profit organization founded in 1944 provides a focal point for individuals and organizations interested in and concerned with the history of the Great Lakes and its maritime heritage. The Society is comprised of nearly twelve hundred members throughout the United States, Canada, and around the world.

Great Lakes and Seaway Shipping. A wonderful, informative site full of facts, related links and stories of the inland seas. Definitely worth a visit!

Lighthouses & Lakeboats. This site is dedicated to those who are enchanted by the mysteries of the Great Lakes and the Lighthouses & Lakeboats that provide a rich history of the region. Featured are books written by noted Great Lakes author Wes Oleszewski.

Great Lakes Science Center. The Great Lakes Science Center is a non-profit, educational institution, whose mission is to stimulate interest and increase understanding of the sciences, with a particular emphasis on the interdependence of scientific, environmental and technological activities in the Great Lakes region.

The Great Lakes Information Network (GLIN) is a partnership that provides one place online for people to find information relating to the binational Great Lakes-St. Lawrence region of North America.

Door County Connections - Great Lakes Information. Information on lighthouses, ship wrecks, Wisconsin DNR, U.S. Coast Guard, shipping news, etc.

RELATED SITES

The Library of Congress has a wonderful collection of photographs and information on all topics and interests. There is an online presentation of many of the exhibitions held at the Library. These virtual exhibitions bring history to life by portraying diverse cultures of the world and the creative minds and lives of artists, philosophers, writers, statesmen, and explorers. Their online exhibitions will be available indefinitely.

The Immigrant Ship Transcribers Guild are building a searchable, free database of on-line passenger lists through a volunteer transcribing effort. If you have been searching tirelessly for your ancestor's illusive crossing of the Atlantic to America, the ISTG may well provide that 'missing link'.
